Evaluation

Overall I think my experience with The Girls has been an awakening into the professional world. I am really happy with my photos and I'm really glad the Photographers Gallery has used my work. I am also happy I have a published article in a magazine to put in my portfolio which should boost my portfolio greatly. It was a new experience working with professionals and it will be interesting to see in the future what its like to work with other professionals. It has also been an awakening to journalism, it was something I was possibly considering going into this as a career however I really did not enjoy writing this article, as small as it is. I felt too under pressure to write something witty and funny and some of the things I came out with weren't that great; I think writing a bigger article would be even more stressful! I don't think this is something I want to pursue now, so doing this project has been good for helping me whittle down what I don't like doing. I did however really enjoy taking the pictures, I have always been really interested in photography but it has never been something I have considered. I think in the future I might continue taking my own pictures, as well as using a photographer, as I'm usually quite fussy with what I want. Overall this project has helped me realise a lot of things. I'm glad I helped out with this event, not only has it helped me develop as a person and in my career plans but it has also enhanced my portfolio.

My article in Paper Eaters

Finally! I have got my hands on the second issue and my article! This is definitely not what I expected as they have turned it into a short photo story which I didn't think they were going to do. The words in the speech bubbles are not mine however the words in the white boxes are the words I submitted and they haven't been changed that much. Its nice to see what they did with it and its nice to see it actually in the magazine and its something I can keep for my portfolio. I personally feel they chose too many images and the page looks a bit cluttered and the red and the pink colour contrast is a bit too much for me, but it fits in with the rest of the magazine which is I guess all that matters.

And another...

And this little bit I spotted on the home page..... Just thought I'd better note them all.

I'm in a Newsletter!

Below is the email newsletter from The Photographers Gallery with my photo prime of place at the top of the email. Also in the email is a link to a "photo's" section which features 15 of my Day In the Life of photos. See this here. It's really weird seeing my images up on an actual website which people are going to see, this is all very new to me. Who knew so much was going to come out of my article?

Published

Today has been very exciting! I got a phone call this morning from Zoe letting me know that my article is definitely going in the 2nd magazine! Whoop! But this is not all. Zoe said the Photographers Gallery have seen my images and like my photos and want to use some of my images for their newsletter they send out to over 30,000 people! ALSO I popped onto the Photographers Gallery website and guess who's picture is there advertising The Girls. MINE! How exciting!! It's amazing to have my work put out so publicly. I'm like a giddy school girl!

Final Images Used

My Final Layout

Due to the fact that my article wont be coming out until the 16th April I have done my article in the way I would have laid it out. I don't know what The Girls have done with my article but I don't expect it would be too different. See the final layout here.

Finish Line

So after my hectic couple of days doing my article, yesterday The Girls laid it out. Sunday night I spent a rather stressful couple of hours typing up captions for the pictures, being witty and funny is not something I can force, however despite a few dodgy captions I was happy with the majority of them. As I won't see what they have done with my article until the 16th April which is after my crit, I think I'm going to do my own layout just so I have something to show at my crit. Also I will use the same pictures and words so it will just be the layout that will be different in The Girls version.

Day 4

Yesterday was my final day of shooting. It's been a long process and I have had far to many pictures so sort through. I now have enough images to make at least 12 scenarios, which is the perfect amount I think. I have uploaded the pictures onto flickr and sent them to Zoe and Andrea for them to pick the final images and I have also given my input as to how I think the day should unfold. I am yet to fully write the words for the article because I don't know which images/scenes will be used, however I have already written the introduction so the rest is just small snippets of writing to set the scene. As the deadline for the 2nd magazine is on Tuesday I'm not sure if they want me to lay the article out as they have people who can probably do it a lot quicker than I can! I've just got to wait to see what they think now. I do hope they like it. (Photos by Pelin Demir)

Day 3

Yesterday was so hetic that I didn't get a chance to write up what happened. Yesterday was my first day of shooting for my article. I had Zoe Wood from arts and events helping me out and she took a million pictures for me which was really great. After an unsure start we got a lot of images in the end probably too many so its going to make it very difficult to choose the few that I need for my article. Zoe quickly went through my images and picked out quite a few so hopefully today will be just a successful. The sinario changed slightly yesterday, as it seemed to difficult to go back to Andrea's flat it has changed to they are living in Selfridges. Today we are going to shoot Andrea sleeping on the sofa's in the Ultra Lounge and brushing her teeth in the toilets. (Pictures by Zoe Wood)

Day 2

Opening Day. I popped down to Selfridges today to check out the finished Paper Eaters area. It looks amazing a lot bigger than it did the other day when it was filled with piles and piles of bags and paper. It was also nice seeing other people from AUCB there and what they are doing, such as Jessica Jarvis's Cut Out Wardrobe and Justine Mckee's Paper Pidgeon display. Also the first issue of Paper Eaters comes out tomorrow so I'm going to buy this to get some ideas for my layout.
The first day of my article is tomorrow. I am very nervous, I hope it comes out as well as I want it too. I have had disaster after disaster with finding an assistant, but now I've got 2 different people for both friday and saturday so I hope that turns out alright.

Day 1

Today was my first day working at Selfridges. My train was late (shocker) so I didn't arrive until 11:00. The space already looked pretty good even in it's messy unfinished state, the pink fences and the checkerboard dance floor are pretty impressive. Throughout the day I helped out with a couple of jobs, I covered a few seat covers with fetching barbie fabric and I also covered 2 doorways in fake flowers and cuddly toys which looked kind of freaky with their heads poking out. The papered lanterns were added throughout the day and look really good as you enter the room. I'm really looking forward to doing my article I think it will be really entertaining and I think the pictures will be really good as the room is so heavily decorated everywhere you look. Epic amounts of paper were used today this room is definitely a shrine to paper.

Spray Painting Master

My outfit has progressed quite a lot since the other day, I have finished paper macheing my skirt and have spray painted my top. I am so pleased the spray painting didn't go wrong as that was my main concern, however it looks really good. Also I desided to add some hearts on the back so it wasn't so plain. The skirt is not finished yet I still want to paint over it like the bag I made and possibly spray paint over it too.
