Paper Eaters

I've agreed with Zoe Sinclair that I will help out over Easter at the event as well as having a double page spread in the magazine. My article will be a day in the life of....Probably Andrea as I can get her in some funny situations, such as on the tube in the morning in her crazy 80's dress and then throughout the day take pictures of her at the event doing various, hopefully quite interesting tasks. I will then submit my images and words to Zoe who will then put them together in the style of the magazine.

Blue Jeans

I brought a 80's girls journal from amazon. It's a Blue Jeans annual from 1984 and it is the type of look to the magazine the girls are trying to create. Mainly the things that leap out at me are the bright background colours and the bright text colours. Also how shockingly cheesy the headlines and text is, it did make me laugh while reading through, it's strange to think this was someones bible in 1984. Will people think this about the magazines of 2010 in the future? I will use the layout from this annual to get ideas for my layout for my day in life of article.

A Day In the Life of

So after talking with Zoe, I feel that a "day in the life of" piece is the article that I'm going to do. I would ideally like to follow Zoe or Andrea around as I feel that would produce some interesting images and bits for me to write about. Zoe has agreed to let me help out over Easter at the event which is really great, so hopefully on one of those days we can fit in when I can be their shadow. The dealines for the magazines are quite tight I'm hoping to make the second magazine which is for the 6th of April.

80's Accessories

Paper - An Endangered Species

I like the idea behind this project paper eaters. For my fashion as a forum essay I am discussing how the magazine is developing and how it may become extinct in the future. The Paper Eaters is about reinventing the magazine and the printing press as well as the traditional cut and paste method. A magazine is a wonderful thing and to let it disappear and be transformed into a digital form would be a shame. I like the idea of playing around with paper, possibly making some paper accessories or using paper chains also I think it would be interesting to see how a paper garment would be constructed, if anyone in our group will dare to create a paper dress.

Initial Ideas

At the moment I am mainly thinking about doing an article for one of the magazines. The girls need articles to fit in between the photo stories of the magazines. I like the idea of doing a "how to" article of how to make a tacky accessory or "A day in the life of..." article and follow someone around, probably an art student, for the day and document what they do then write about it. But as I keep researching I'm hoping to find some other interesting things to write about. I also want to get involved with styling for the magazines if possible, as well as spending time at the event, as well as possibly doing some sort of photo shoot with one garment made by one of the construction students. As well as doing the river island project. I'm sure I can do all of this.....

Paper Eaters Key Words

1980's with a twist
ultra feminine
kitsch (without being panto-like)
edgy
attention-grabbing
Victorian / Edwardian / gothic / dark
post-apocalyptic
unfinished
comic strip / pop art / tabloid /newspaper print
paint splatter / scribble / punk

motifs: cracked mirror / eyes moving in paintings / keys / locks / secrets / lockets / love / new girl in town / transformation (swan?) / vanity / dance / clocks / watches

I like the kitsch theme, I also like the idea of using keys/lock/lockets and clocks and trying to work those aspects in some how. I also like the idea of putting a spin on the traditional 80's look.

Jem

From Zoe's talk yesterday the cartoon Jem seemed to be a massive influence on the style of the event. Jem is an 80's cartoon about music company owner Jerrica Benton, her singer alter-ego Jem, her band the Holograms, and their adventures. The colours are crazy! There is every colour under the sun involved in this cartoon -pinks, yellows, oranges, purples and greens. These will probably be the occuring colours throught this project, as the 80's look in general is all about colour.

The Girls

The Girls, a crazy, eccentric, colourful pair who began working together in 1996. They have won several awards and become known for their self portraiture, eclectic style and twisting traditional Britishness. They are currently planning for a month long live art instillation in Selfridges running throughout April and they have roped in the help of us students at AUCB. This is a great opportunity for me to get some work experience, I have already emailed to get my name through straight away as I'm really keen to get involved with as much as possible. What I like about The Girls is their style and attitude. I love the colours of this up and coming project and for a while I have been wanting to experiment with something different and this is different from my usual style. I think it will be fun to break free and just go crazy in a project and I'm really looking forward to wading in.

In the Beginning...

Today we got our new brief for Negotiated Studies. There is more than enough things to be thinking about for this project so I think this blog will be very full and random. We are working alongside a group known as "The Girls" who are putting on a live art instillation in Selfridges, throughout the whole of April. As well as this I am helping out with the River Island Rocks event project which will be held on April 17th. This blog will show my thought process throughout this project, my trials, tribulations, ups and downs.
